About Tyrrell's Wines
Tyrrell's Wines is the guardian of the Hunter Valley's most precious heritage — a family-owned estate that has been farming the same red volcanic soils at Pokolbin since 1858. The Vat 1 Semillon is one of Australia's greatest white wines, a wine of extraordinary tension and longevity that reveals its true brilliance only after a decade in the cellar. For over 160 years, the Tyrrell family has remained the benchmark producer of Hunter Valley Semillon and Shiraz, wines that are uniquely and irreplaceably themselves.
Our Story
Edward Tyrrell planted the first vines at his Pokolbin property in 1858, establishing what would become one of Australia's most important and enduring wine dynasties. Now in its fifth generation under Bruce and Chris Tyrrell, the estate remains defiantly family-owned and committed to the Hunter Valley's two great specialties: Semillon and Shiraz.
The Vat wines — particularly the legendary Vat 1 Semillon and Vat 9 Shiraz — are among the most age-worthy wines in the Australian canon. A 10-year-old Vat 1 transforms from a lean, citrusy wine into something of extraordinary complexity, developing lanolin, toast and honey notes that challenge the greatest white Burgundies. Tyrrell's is proof that the Hunter Valley, for all its climatic challenges, can produce wines of irreplaceable character.
