About Henschke

Henschke is one of the great wine dynasties of the world — a fifth-generation family estate in the Eden Valley whose Hill of Grace Shiraz, sourced from a single vineyard of ungrafted vines planted in the 1860s, is considered one of the finest and rarest bottles in Australia. Winemaker Stephen Henschke and viticulturist Prue Henschke have spent four decades transforming the estate's farming practices to biodynamic, producing wines of extraordinary complexity, longevity and soul that rank among the country's greatest cultural treasures.

Our Story

Johann Christian Henschke planted the first Henschke vines in the Keyneton area of the Eden Valley in 1862, establishing a winery that would remain in the family for five generations. The winery's ascent to international fame came with the recognition of Hill of Grace — a single vineyard of ancient, ungrafted Shiraz vines planted in the 1860s, which produces one of the world's most majestic and sought-after red wines.

Stephen and Prue Henschke, who have overseen the estate since the 1970s and 1980s respectively, represent one of the great partnerships in Australian wine. Stephen's winemaking is a model of restraint and respect for the fruit, while Prue's viticultural research and conversion of the estate to biodynamic farming has profoundly improved wine quality across the range. Hill of Grace, Mount Edelstone and the Julius Eden Valley Riesling are benchmarks by which all Australian Shiraz and Riesling are measured.
