About Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise is one of Tasmania's most beloved boutique wineries — a small family operation in the Tamar Valley producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of genuine character and remarkable elegance from the island's cool, maritime-influenced climate. Winemaker Joe Holyman's wines are made with a light touch — wild ferment, basket press, minimal new oak — allowing the extraordinary fruit purity of Tasmanian viticulture to express itself without interference. The Holyman Pinot Noir is an annual highlight of the Australian wine calendar.

Our Story

Joe and Lou Holyman established Stoney Rise on the Gravelly Beach property in the Tamar Valley in 2004, converting a farming property into one of Tasmania's most admired small wineries. The property's north-facing slopes and free-draining dolerite soils provide ideal conditions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the Tamar Valley's cooling maritime influence from Bass Strait ensures a long, gentle ripening season that builds natural acidity and flavour complexity.

Joe's winemaking philosophy is one of restraint and honesty — whole bunch inclusion in the Pinot Noir ferments, wild yeast throughout, gentle basket pressing, and maturation in old French oak that flavours without overwhelming. The wines speak unmistakably of Tasmania: fragrant, precise, deeply flavoured and with a linear natural acidity that makes them extraordinary food wines. The Holyman Pinot Noir, the estate's flagship, shows what Tasmanian Pinot can achieve when farming is meticulous and intervention is minimal.
