About Shaw + Smith

Shaw + Smith is one of Australia's most respected modern wine estates — founded in 1989 by master of wine Martin Shaw and winemaker Michael Hill Smith, the Adelaide Hills estate has become the benchmark producer of Australian Sauvignon Blanc and one of the country's finest Chardonnay producers. The M3 Chardonnay, sourced from a single close-planted Adelaide Hills vineyard, is a textbook example of cool-climate Chardonnay with mineral precision, integrated oak and extraordinary balance.

Our Story

Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW established Shaw + Smith in 1989 with a clear vision: to produce wines from the cool-climate Adelaide Hills that could stand alongside the best in the world. Both founders brought rare credentials — Martin a renowned winemaker, Michael Australia's first master of wine — and this combination of technical mastery and intellectual rigour has defined the estate from its inception.

The Balhannah winery, completed in 2000, is a gravity-flow facility designed to handle fruit with maximum gentleness. The estate now farms around 70 hectares of sustainably managed vineyards across the Adelaide Hills, producing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Pinot Gris that consistently rank among Australia's finest examples. The M3 single-vineyard Chardonnay, named for its planting density of 3,000 vines per hectare, is widely regarded as a national benchmark.
